What is Manufactured Sand/ Crushed Sand/ Rock Sand/ Artificial Sand
The technical name of Sand is “Fine Aggregate”. Fine Aggregate, as defined by Indian Standard ‘IS 383’published in 1970, is material below 4.75 mm and above 150 microns with appropriate gradation of particles. It is used in the cement-concrete mix for building & dam construction.

Gradation of Fine Aggregate is measured using the Sieve Analysis Test. The table below gives a clear idea about sand gradation as per IS 383-1970. The sand produced contains particles of sizes between 150 Micron and 4.75 mm with gradations as per the table below.

Every particle size is important in the aggregate. Gradation of aggregate is the particle size distribution of the aggregate. If the aggregate contains particles of varying size, the voids in the mix would be minimal thereby producing dense concrete. Gradation of aggregate is as important as the quality as it has a marked effect on the workability, uniformity and finished effect of the concrete1.
